In traditional, non-heterosexualised societies where men's spaces were strong, men had a lot of social space to display social, emotional and physical intimacy with other men, which today heterosexual societies castigate as 'gay'. In these societies men could even relate sexually with other men and it was all a part of manhood. The only thing marginalised was receptive anal sex -- which was considered gay/third sex.
